The best Tresorit alternative depends on what you use Tresorit for. For encrypted storage at a lower price with encrypted file names, Proton Drive is the closest match; for sending files, especially files larger than Tresorit's 5 GB link cap, a transfer tool like RocketShare, Wormhole or SwissTransfer is simpler. This guide compares them as of October 2026.
Tresorit is a mature, end-to-end encrypted cloud. It encrypts file contents and file and folder names, is ISO 27001:2022 certified by TÜV Rheinland, supports HIPAA (with BAAs) and GDPR, and lets business customers choose from 12 data residency regions. In a 2024 ETH Zurich study of five encrypted cloud providers, it was the least affected. For the direct head-to-head, see RocketShare vs Tresorit.
Why people look for a Tresorit alternative
- Price. Personal plans run €4.99 to €29.99 per month and business plans €20 to €25 per user per month with 3- to 5-user minimums (as of October 2026). Trials require payment details.
- File size caps. Maximum file size is 500 MB on the free Basic plan and 2 GB to 20 GB on paid plans. Files in shared links are capped at 250 MB, 2 GB or 5 GB.
- Monthly link quotas. Basic and Personal plans limit links, link traffic and downloads per month (for example 50 links and 50 GB of link traffic on Personal). Once exceeded, new links and downloads of existing links are blocked until the month resets.
- Tresorit Send's limits. The free Send tool caps uploads at 5 GB, fixes expiry at 7 days, allows 10 downloads per file, and Tresorit says its third-party audit and open-source release are still on the roadmap.
- Closed-source clients (per reviews), and some operational metadata is always stored in Ireland, whatever residency region you choose.
- Inactive free accounts are deleted if you don't log in at least once every 210 days.
What to look for in an alternative
- End-to-end encryption of contents, and whether file names are covered.
- Audits, certifications or open source if you need to prove security to others.
- File size and link limits that match your real files.
- Recipient experience: no account or app needed on their side.
- Link controls: passwords, expiry, download limits.
- Pricing model: storage, seats or volume sent.
- Data location and jurisdiction.

1. RocketShare: large encrypted transfers from the browser
RocketShare is a browser-based file transfer service that encrypts file contents end-to-end (zero-knowledge) before upload. It is based in the Netherlands and stores files in Amsterdam. Files are encrypted with AES-256-GCM in your browser and the key travels in the link's URL fragment, which browsers don't send to the server. There is nothing to install for sender or recipient, and no per-file size limit within your monthly quota, so files well beyond Tresorit's 5 GB link cap are fine. Without an account you can send 2 GB per transfer with 3-day links; a free account gives 4 GB per month plus passwords, download limits and email delivery. Paid plans: Mini $3/month (60 GB), Starter $7/month (350 GB), Pro $18/month (unlimited, fair use 10 TB) and Teams $15/seat/month from 2 seats, with links of up to 90 days.
Where it falls short of Tresorit: file names, sizes and messages are not encrypted; there is no certification, audit, SSO or 2FA; there are no apps, storage or sync. With email delivery the link and key pass through RocketShare's servers to be sent; RocketShare can't read your files when you share the link yourself. See pricing and the security whitepaper.
2. Proton Drive: encrypted storage for less
Proton Drive is the nearest storage replacement. It encrypts file contents, file and folder names and thumbnails with OpenPGP, publishes open-source apps and has been audited by Securitum. Proton AG is a Swiss company controlled by the nonprofit Proton Foundation, with servers in Switzerland, Germany or Norway. There is no per-file size limit beyond your storage; the free plan offers up to 5 GB and Drive Plus costs $4.99/month for 200 GB (as of October 2026). Shareable links need no account to open and support passwords and expiry dates. What it lacks compared with Tresorit: certifications such as ISO 27001, data residency choices and business link controls like watermarks; and there is no graphical Linux app yet. See RocketShare vs Proton Drive.
3. Wormhole: a free alternative to Tresorit Send
Wormhole encrypts files in the browser with AES-GCM, puts the key in the URL fragment and also encrypts file names. It is free with no account, sends up to 10 GB, and lets you set expiry (1 to 24 hours) and a download limit (1 to 100). There is no password protection, links never last more than 24 hours, and above 5 GB the sender must keep the tab open until the recipient downloads. It is run by a US company with files on Backblaze. See RocketShare vs Wormhole.
4. SwissTransfer: big free transfers, Swiss hosting
SwissTransfer from Infomaniak sends up to 50 GB per transfer for free, with links up to 30 days, free passwords and download limits, and storage only in Infomaniak's own Swiss data centres. It is not end-to-end encrypted, as SwissTransfer itself states, so it is a weaker fit for confidential files than Tresorit. See RocketShare vs SwissTransfer.
How to choose
- You need certifications, HIPAA BAAs or data residency: stay with Tresorit.
- You want encrypted storage with encrypted names for less: Proton Drive.
- You mainly send large files or folders and want recipients to need nothing: RocketShare.
- You need a quick free encrypted send under 10 GB to someone online now: Wormhole.
