RocketShare vs Filemail

Filemail handles large files well but doesn't encrypt them end-to-end. RocketShare adds zero-knowledge encryption to every transfer. See how they compare.

Got a massive file to send? Filemail is built for that, with desktop apps and Outlook integration for business users. But Filemail doesn't offer end-to-end encryption — your files are accessible on their servers. RocketShare handles large file transfers too, with zero-knowledge encryption that protects every byte before it leaves your browser.

The encryption difference

RocketShare encrypts every file with AES-256-GCM using 256-bit keys generated by the Web Crypto API — directly in your browser. The encryption key is embedded in the URL fragment (the part after #), which per RFC 3986 is never sent to the server. RocketShare cannot access your files at any point.

Filemail uses HTTPS for transfers and encrypts files at rest, but holds the encryption keys. Your files are accessible to the service on their servers.

Large file handling

Both services handle big files. Filemail offers desktop apps that can speed up transfers through UDP acceleration. RocketShare uses streaming encryption — files are encrypted and uploaded in chunks directly in your browser, so the upload starts immediately without waiting for the entire file to encrypt. No app installation required.

EU data residency

RocketShare stores all encrypted files in Amsterdam, EU, providing clear European data residency alongside zero-knowledge encryption. Filemail stores data across US and Norwegian infrastructure. For businesses handling data subject to GDPR, RocketShare's combination of EU residency and technical privacy protection matters.
