Wormhole is a privacy-respecting file sharing tool that encrypts files in the browser before uploading — just like RocketShare. That puts Wormhole in a small category of services that take encryption seriously. So what's different? Features, limits, and flexibility. RocketShare gives you more control over your transfers and scales to team use.

Both encrypt properly — with a difference

RocketShare uses AES-256-GCM with 256-bit keys generated by the Web Crypto API directly in your browser. Wormhole uses AES-128-GCM — still strong encryption, but with shorter keys.

Both services embed the encryption key in the URL fragment (never sent to the server), providing genuine zero-knowledge guarantees. The core privacy model is the same.

More control over shared files

Wormhole keeps things minimal — which is an advantage for quick, casual shares but a limitation when you need more control:

  • Password protection — add a second layer of security beyond the encrypted link
  • Configurable expiry — 3 to 90 days vs Wormhole's fixed 24 hours
  • Email recipients — send transfer links to up to 50 recipients
  • No file compression — files transfer at full quality

When you're sending sensitive documents to clients or partners, these controls matter. Wormhole's 24-hour expiry means your recipient needs to download quickly — RocketShare gives you up to 90 days.

Scaling beyond individual use

RocketShare offers team plans at $15/seat/month with seat-based billing, making it suitable for organizations that need encrypted file transfers across multiple users. Wormhole is designed as an individual tool without team features or paid plans.

Pricing

Wormhole is completely free with no paid tier (though they've indicated plans to add one). RocketShare offers a free tier plus paid plans for more capacity:

  • Free — 4 GB/month, 10 transfers, up to 7-day expiry
  • Mini — $3/month — 60 GB/month, 20 transfers, up to 30-day expiry
  • Starter — $7/month — 350 GB/month, 40 transfers, up to 60-day expiry
  • Pro — $18/month — Unlimited transfers, up to 90-day expiry
  • Teams — $15/seat/month — Unlimited transfers, seat-based billing

EU data residency

RocketShare stores all encrypted files in Amsterdam, EU, providing clear European data residency. For businesses and professionals subject to GDPR, knowing exactly where your encrypted data lives matters.

Why choose RocketShare

  • AES-256-GCM encryption — stronger keys than Wormhole's 128-bit
  • Password protection — Wormhole doesn't offer this
  • Configurable expiry up to 90 days — vs 24 hours on Wormhole
  • Team plans with seat-based billing
  • EU data residency — files stored in Amsterdam
  • 8 languages supported
