RocketShare vs WeTransfer

WeTransfer doesn't encrypt your files end-to-end. RocketShare does — with the same drag-and-drop simplicity. See how they compare on encryption, pricing, and privacy.

Need to send a file quickly? WeTransfer makes it easy — but your files aren't encrypted end-to-end. WeTransfer can see, scan, and access everything you upload. RocketShare gives you the same drag-and-drop simplicity with zero-knowledge encryption built into every transfer, free or paid.

How the encryption differs

RocketShare encrypts every file with AES-256-GCM using 256-bit keys generated by the Web Crypto API — directly in your browser. The encryption key is embedded in the URL fragment (the part after #), which per RFC 3986 is never sent to the server. The result: RocketShare cannot access your files, even if compelled by a court order.

WeTransfer does not offer end-to-end encryption. Files sit on their servers where WeTransfer staff and infrastructure have access. This applies to both free and paid tiers — their Starter and Ultimate plans don't add zero-knowledge encryption.

Simplicity without compromise

WeTransfer built its reputation on a dead-simple experience: drag, drop, send. RocketShare matches that simplicity:

  • Drag-and-drop file uploads in the browser
  • No software to install — works in any modern browser
  • No account required for recipients — just a link
  • Streaming encryption for large files — upload starts immediately, no waiting

The difference: RocketShare adds zero-knowledge encryption to this workflow without adding friction. You don't have to choose between convenience and security.

Pricing

RocketShare plans:

  • Free — 4 GB/month, 10 transfers, up to 7-day expiry
  • Mini — $3/month — 60 GB/month, 20 transfers, up to 30-day expiry
  • Starter — $7/month — 350 GB/month, 40 transfers, up to 60-day expiry
  • Pro — $18/month — Unlimited transfers, up to 90-day expiry
  • Teams — $15/seat/month — Unlimited transfers, seat-based billing

Every RocketShare plan includes zero-knowledge encryption, password protection, and download limits.

WeTransfer plans:

  • Free — 3 GB/month total, 10 transfers, 3-day expiry
  • Starter — $6.99/month — 300 GB/month, password protection
  • Ultimate — $25/month — Unlimited transfers

RocketShare's free tier gives you more data (4 GB vs 3 GB) and longer expiry (7 days vs 3 days) — plus encryption that WeTransfer doesn't offer at any price.

EU data residency

Both WeTransfer and RocketShare have European roots. However, WeTransfer was acquired by Bending Spoons in 2024, and the free plan conditions have already changed significantly since then — the expiry was cut from 7 days to 3 days and a monthly quota was introduced.

RocketShare stores encrypted files in Amsterdam, EU, with zero-knowledge encryption on top. Even if data were somehow accessed, it would be unreadable without the key that only exists in your share link.

Why choose RocketShare

  • Zero-knowledge encryption on every plan — not just paid tiers
  • More generous free tier — 4 GB and 7-day expiry vs 3 GB and 3 days
  • Password protection and download limits included free
  • EU data residency — files stored in Amsterdam
  • No file compression — full quality preserved
  • Team plans with seat-based billing at $15/seat/month
